๐Ÿ“œ OUR HISTORY
  • 1752 โ€” Settled as "Pontoosuck"; incorporated 1761 and renamed for British PM William Pitt the Elder. Became a city in 1891.
  • 1791 โ€” A Pittsfield bylaw banning baseball near the new meetinghouse windows is the earliest known written reference to baseball in America. You're welcome, Cooperstown.
  • 1850s โ€” Herman Melville writes Moby-Dick at his farm Arrowhead, staring at the whale-shaped ridge of Mount Greylock. Nathaniel Hawthorne lived nearby; the two famously hiked and argued about whales.
  • 1903โ€“1987 โ€” General Electric transforms Pittsfield into a company town, building power transformers and (in wartime) ordnance. The Housatonic River cleanup from that era continues today.
  • Today โ€” A reinvented city: arts on North Street, the Colonial and Barrington Stage, and Greylock looming over it all like it always has.
๐ŸŽญ ARTS & CULTURE
  • ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Berkshire Museum โ€” art, natural history & an aquarium, downtown since 1903.
  • ๐ŸŽญ Barrington Stage Company & the historic Colonial Theatre โ€” where The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was born.
  • ๐Ÿฅ Third Thursdays โ€” North Street shuts down for a free street festival, May through September.
  • ๐Ÿก Arrowhead (Melville's home) and nearby Hancock Shaker Village.
  • ๐ŸŽผ Tanglewood (Boston Symphony's summer home) is ten minutes down the road in Lenox.
  • ๐ŸŒฒ Onota & Pontoosuc lakes, Bousquet ski area, and the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail.
๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ CIVIC LIFE & POLITICS
  • ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Government: Mayorโ€“Council form. The City Council has 11 members โ€” 7 ward councilors + 4 at-large โ€” meeting at City Hall, 70 Allen Street.
  • ๐Ÿ‘” Mayor: Peter Marchetti, elected 2023 (check the Mayor's page for current office hours).
  • ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ County seat of Berkshire County; part of MA's 1st congressional district โ€” the westernmost turf in the Commonwealth.
  • ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Voting: register, find your ward/precinct, and see election dates via the Registrar of Voters.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฃ Hot topics: the Housatonic River PCB cleanup, downtown revitalization, housing, and the eternal pothole question. Public comment is your friend!
