      LOCAL HISTORY / 04

A small city with a long memory.

From Berkshire farmland and summer visitors to a manufacturing city that built electrical machinery for much of the world — and is still repairing what that century left behind.

      1. SETTLEMENT / TOWN
        1761

        Incorporated as Pittsfield

The township was incorporated in 1761 and named for William Pitt, the British statesman. It grew up around the Housatonic valley where the river slows and the farmland opens out — and by the 19th century it had become the shire town of Berkshire County, where the courts, the newspaper, and the county's civic life sat.

      2. BOOKS & MOUNTAINS
        1850

        Melville at Arrowhead

Herman Melville moved to a farm on Holmes Road in Pittsfield and named it Arrowhead. He wrote Moby-Dick there with Mount Greylock on the horizon — a reminder that this town's cultural history is not decoration on top of its working history, but part of the same story.

      3. THEATRES & MUSEUMS
        1903

        Colonial Theatre, Berkshire Museum

Within two years of each other, the Colonial Theatre and the Berkshire Museum opened on South Street — a downtown built for shows, lectures, and a public that expected culture to be within walking distance. Both are still here, restored and running, which is rarer than it sounds for a city this size.

      4. MANUFACTURING
        1942

The electrical plant and the transformer lines

For most of the 20th century, General Electric's Pittsfield works made transformers, motors, and electrical equipment — and employed a large share of the city. The work also left contamination in Silver Lake and the Housatonic River, and one of the biggest river cleanups in New England has been running here ever since.

Onota, Pontoosuc and the state forest

Two city lakes inside the municipal line, a state forest of more than eleven thousand acres on the ridge, and parkland along the river: the outdoors is not outside Pittsfield, it runs through it. Local traditions — the Fourth of July parade, the lakes in summer, the trails in October — are the ones residents actually mark their year by.

      6. LITERATURE & LANDSCAPE
        1987

Reading the county as a library

Berkshire County keeps producing writers and readers, and the Pittsfield Athenaeum has been a working lending library since the 1870s. The county's political traditions are local too: town meeting, ward representation, open boards, and a public that shows up to argue about zoning in person.

      7. DIGITAL HOMEPAGE
        TODAY

        The digital town hall

A working homepage for a working city: the routes residents actually use, the board where neighbors talk, and a live square that shows the place is occupied. The 1990s civic web was optimistic about who the internet was for. This is that optimism, rebuilt properly.

      LOCAL LIFE & CULTURE / 05

      The culture is the point.

The civic knowledge residents actually share: which trail is dry after rain, where the council meets, who is playing the Colonial, and what is being argued about on the board this week.
